It was another late, sleepless night, just like the usual. Shawn had curled herself into one of the over-stuffed fireside chairs with her copy of Hogwarts: A History in the hopes that if reading the book itself didn't make her fall back to sleep, at least she might find something interesting. Well, it wasn't exactly making her tired, but she did find herself getting more and more fascinated with the section on the Forbidden Forest. She'd never taken a Care of Magical Creatures class, and had only ever been as far as the forest's edge to collect herbs for a herbology project. And the more she thought about that, the more she realized something: that was lame. She'd explored the halls so much that she knew them as well as the back of her own hand, but the forest? She hadn't really ventured there yet...
Her curiosity peaked and a purpose in her mind, Shawn pulled out her wand and tiptoed through the common room and out the portrait hole. She listened for a moment, and when she didn't hear anything, she began to make her way through the hallways, scampering around on the tips of her toes as graceful as any dancer. At one point she feared one of the paintings would give her away, but the woman inside it simply smiled and winked as she slinked by. Before she knew it, she was home free, and out in the cold night air. She stood still for a moment and allowed a shiver to pass through her body before hugging her arms to herself and moving forward.
Outside, shadows danced on the grass and small patches of snow seemed to glitter like diamonds under the light of the full moon. Shawn sucked in a deep breath, and even though it burned her lungs, it felt wonderful. Whether it was simply the fresh air, her momentary freedom, or that strange rush of adrenaline she seemed to get whenever she did something she knew she wasn't supposed to do, she didn't know...but she didn't care, either.
When she reached the forest's edge, she hugged her coat a little closer to herself before directing her wand forward. "Lumos," she whispered. In front of her, her wand lit a path into the unknown blackness of the Forbidden Forest. It didn't look so forbidden to her. A tiny smirk settled on her face as she stood there for a moment. Finally, she decided to walk forward. Leaves, twigs, and snow crunched under her feet as she moved. She wasn't sure why she was here or really what she was here for, but it was sure to be an adventure either way.

Cal's rounds didn't technically cover the areas outside the castle, but he had a nasty habit of wandering out there anyway. Of course, if any of the professors found him he knew he wouldn't be able to pull the Prefect card. He'd be in just as much trouble as any other student, especially with the destination he had in mind. The Forbidden Forest was an excellent place to think, he had found, and it was one of the only safe locations that he could get to when his brother was still in school. There were so many places to hide that Leo had never been able to find him. Usually that meant that things were worse for him later, but at least he had a few hours reprieve.
Now, however, he just needed to go somewhere to think. He had just finished having a painful conversation with Schuyler. Painful because of the way Schuyler always reacted. Cal hated seeing that look on his face and he hated knowing that he was the one to put that look there even more, but there was just too much at stake here. They didn't belong together and they were not made for each other. He just needed to figure out why he kept going back to Schuyler every time after one of these messy breakups. With nowhere else that he wanted to be, Cal headed out to the Forbidden Forest and found a tree to sit in. He climbed up to a branch that cradled him perfectly and just lay there for a long time.
He was just beginning to wonder what time it was when he saw a light out of the corner of his eye. He shifted slightly to investigate and lost his grip, a foot slipping against the bark. He wasn't quick enough to grab onto the branch and felt himself fall. Luckily it wasn't too far up and, though he hit the ground hard, he didn't think he had broken anything. He groaned as he lay there for a few minutes, trying to catch his breath.

Shawn jumped when she heard a strange noise nearby. Someone else in the forest? She pivoted on her heel, pointing her wand in the direction she thought she'd heard the noise from. At first, she didn't see anything there, and her heart thudded loudly in her chest as she tried to figure out what she had heard. She moved her wand back and forth and finally got the nerve to take a few steps forward. Holding her wand out again, she looked around, straining her ears to listen for anymore noises.
"Hello?" she called out. Her voice was barely more than a harsh whisper, but it seemed so much louder in comparison to the strange quiet that the Forbidden Forest seemed to offer. She looked around a few more times, and couldn't help but begin to feel a little frustrated when she couldn't find the source of the disturbance. She took another step forward and looked side to side, up, and down...
Down. There it was....or 'he', rather.
"Shit. Are you alright?" she asked, dropping to her knees beside him and shifting her wand into her other hand. "You're not hurt, are you? That sounded like it hurt like hell..." She used the light of her wand to look him up and down. He didn't appear to be hurt, but looks could be deceiving. She rolled her bottom lip between her teeth when she noticed a very familiar and dooming pin on his robes. Her wand stopped moving as she stared at it, a small frown coming to her lips.
"Just my luck..."

"I'm fine," Cal said, but he groaned again as he sat up. That hadn't been one of the most thrilling experiences in his life. He could do without that happening again, definitely. He wasn't even ready to stand just yet, so he remained on the ground, staring up at the person that had discovered him. At least it wasn't a professor and his night hadn't been completely ruined, at least not any more so than it already had given the reason he was out here to begin with. He tried to school his expression, but there was too much going on in his mind for that. Finally, there was something that he could really grab onto.
He smirked when he saw her look at his badge. "I won't dock points if you keep your mouth shut that I was out here too." After all, it wasn't like she was a Hufflepuff or anything. Besides, after a particularly shitty couple of days he was feeling quite generous. He looked up at the branch that he had been on and scowled as if it had done something to personally offend him. It had in a way, letting him slip off of it like that. How dare it? He brushed his hands off on his robe as he stood, wincing as a pain shot through him. Shit, he was going to be sore tomorrow. He looked back at the girl and tilted his head to the side.
"Hey... You're on the Ravenclaw team, aren't you?" He'd never really paid much attention to the other teams. He had no idea what her name was, but he knew that she played. He'd spotted her on the pitch when he wasn't looking around madly for the snitch. He stretched, trying to work the pain out of his muscles. He'd have quite a few bruises forming in the next few days.
