Neville had owled her ahead of time, just so that she wouldn't be frightened upon his return. The owl he received back hadn't been what he expected. He knew she'd likely be angry with him, or at the very least upset, but he expected her to understand, as well. He deserved to be yelled at, but his reasoning was solid. He had chosen to go... No... He had no choice. He needed to protect her, and going far away from her was the only thing he could do.
He approached the front door, drawing a deep breath. In his arm, a bouquet of white and red roses and a fluffy teddy bear rested - the flowers for his wife, and the toy for his child. Neville couldn't wait to see them, couldn't wait to hold Bridie in his arms... couldn't wait to meet their baby. Lifting his free hand, he knocked on the door and awaited the answer.

Neville waited for an entire half-hour. His feet were starting to hurt, and he leaned against the frame of the door. He dragged his hand down the outside of the door and he sighed, looking down. "Bridie.." he murmured, "Please come out.." It was like torture, waiting for her like that. Then again, he knew... he'd made her wait for two years.
When she finally came to the door, a wide smile spread on his face. He couldn't stop tears from burning in his eyes, and he breathed her name like a prayer. "Bridie." Neville stepped inside, following her up the stairs. There was a strange absence of the presence of a child... No photos, no toys, no crib... He felt his heart sink. Where was his baby? "Bridie, please.."

Neville ducked his head a bit, cringing at her words. "Bridie, I-" he was cut off, and sighed. He set the bear and the roses aside and he reached for her, only to be shot down again. The poor man was at a loss for words. He had no idea how much of a negative impact he'd had on the poor girl, and he felt horrible... but it had been for her safety. He just didn't want to see her tortured, or worse...
"I don't expect-- Bridie, please!" He held his hands up as the wedding photo was heaved at him, fumbling it for a moment or two before catching it and clutching it to himself. Neville looked at it fondly, smiling for just a moment before regaining his serious composure. "Bridie, I'm sorry. I didn't want to leave. I had to. It wasn't for business, it was to save your life. The life of our child. I left to protect you! I don't--" he sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose and approaching her again. "I don't expect you to forget, but please... you have to at least try to understand, to forgive me. I left because I loved you. Do you remember, that day they left that Muggleborn girl's body on the front step? I didn't-- want them to kill you, or hurt you. I left because they were coming after me. The people I loved. You were... are... all I have left! I couldn't see them take your life just because I was around you."

"Oh don't please Bridie, me. You sorry excuse for a man." Bridie said still keeping her voice down. Oh she was pissed alright, "I was right that was a lame excuse. You coward ever think that they could still come at me even though you were gone. To Merlin knows where." She pondered rather or not to tell him there was no child. Oh well since he was kicking him why not kick some more, right?
"Life of our child, hmmm let me think." She paused for a second, "Oh you mean the one I miscarried, that one. Some protecting you did there cause the stress of you leaving, me not eating or sleeping not to mention my heart. Yeah, I lost him. Course why am I telling you, you left so what would you care that I had deal with that alone." She grabbed the flowers and chucked them at him as well, "You don't leave because you love someone. You don't abandon them because you love them, you don't make them sick with worry for two years because you love them. And you for damn sure don't leave them to deal with losing a child alone because you love them. No you stay and face whatever life throws at you together as a team. No matter what happens."
And then it was like the two years of emotions finally hit her cause well she started crying and not like the kind where a person can still talk or stand crying either. This was a complete breakdown crying. Something she had said she wouldn't do but she was after all female. And she dserved it right? Right.

Neville felt his heart shatter as the words left her lips. She'd lost their child, and it was his fault. "I-".. he couldn't find the words. His eyes filled with tears, and his chest tightened. Never in his worst nightmares had he imagined something like this happening... least of all because he'd been trying to protect her. To protect them. "I didn't-- I'm so sorry, I never meant--" he ducked again as the bouquet was pelted at his head. "I didn't think they'd-- come after you if it looked like I'd abandoned you... They'd assume that I didn't care, and leave you alone. Bridie, I'm sorry!"
Each word she spoke cut him deeper. He had no idea... But he deserved this, he deserved to be reamed, to be yelled at, to be scolded. He didn't deserve to have her anymore. Neville hadn't done anything worthwhile for her since he left. He hadn't sent word, he just... went. He did it to protect her, but seeing her now made him realize that he'd made a huge mistake. "I'm so sorry, Bridie." His voice was hushed, quiet.
As she broke down, he rushed to her and wrapped her in his arms, trying to support her and hold her up. Neville stroked along her back lightly, up to her hair, and hoped she wouldn't rip him to shreds. He was only trying to help. He was always only trying to help. It never seemed to do much except mess things up for him. "Bridie... I- I'm so sorry... I love you... I love you, and it's safe now.. They're in Azkaban, and I'm here.. I'm here.."

Neville held his wife tight against his chest, stroking her hair. "Shh, it's alright..." he whispered, kissing the crown of her head. He'd missed her. He'd missed her terribly. He felt her quake against him with her sobs, and he wished more than anything that he could take it all back. But he couldn't. No matter what he did, no matter what he tried, he couldn't take it back. He just had to fix it from here.
"I know," he said quietly, pulling back enough to stroke her cheek with his thumb, just under her eye. He wiped away a tear and kissed her forehead. "But I'll do anything, Bridie. Just tell me what to do. I know, I ... messed up. I messed up enormously, and it's going to take so much work to fix this... But I'm going to try. I love you, Bridie. All this time away, and that hasn't changed one bit."
