Hermione had every intention of discussing the previous day's events with Bill herself after her breakfast. She'd gotten back rather late from her little trip to London, and had been exhausted. Yawning, she stretched out in bed for a moment before slowly getting to her feet, tossing on a set of robes, and heading to the kitchens to get a bagel and some coffee. It was early, and the Great Hall was still practically empty, so she shuffled back up to her own quarters to eat her food, shutting the door with a soft click behind her. About three bites into her bagel, an owl arrived with the Daily Prophet. Hermione paid the bird, took the paper, and slid back into her chair. Another bagel bite and a few sips of coffee later, she finally opened up the paper. When her eyes caught one of the headlines, she nearly choked.
"Bloody idiots." Hermione could already feel the heat rising to her cheeks as she read through the article. Of course, they only had part of the story. The old man hadn't heard the conversation. She'd told him she was engaged. She was getting married. He knew all that when he kissed her. She'd even shoved him away. But no. Of course the Prophet only latched on to the part that furthered their own agenda and made for the best soap opera. Readers. That's all they wanted. Never mind the facts. Never mind the lives they potentially ruined along the way.
Hermione's stomach tied itself into a tight knot. She almost felt like she was going to be sick. Her bagel and coffee forgotten, she shoved out of her chair, the paper wadded up in her right hand, and headed for the door. Luckily, Bill's office wasn't very far from her own. She had been pretty used to seeing her name in the paper over time, but it sickened her that this was happening again...and this time, they'd dragged Bill's name into it. He'd be opening his own copy of the Prophet right about now, and she hadn't had the chance to speak to him about it, yet. What would he think? What would he say?
Her feet moved quickly, and she was standing in front of Bill's office in record time. She knocked quietly several times before poking her head just inside his door. "Bill?" she whispered. "Bill, it's not what it says it is..."

Like every morning, Bill got out of bed and fetched breakfast for his family. He loved starting out the day with a nice meal with them, and the kids always seemed excited about it as well. They had the chance to talk about things over breakfast before Bill went out and did all the things he needed to do. It gave him a chance to look over the stories in the Prophet and tell his kids anything that might be important. That way, they could have a discussion about it, especially if something frightening had happened. There were still Death Eaters out there, after all. Of all the things Bill had expected to see in the Prophet, this story was not one of them. Today at breakfast, Bill was abnormally silent while he read over the story in the Prophet. When his kids were finished eating, he told them that they could play wherever they wanted. They generally liked to run around the castle and explore everything there was there and he had something a bit more pressing he had to attend to. If Hermione didn’t come to him about this, then he would find her later in the day. He went into his office, his copy of the Daily Prophet on the desk in front of him and he waited. Still, he couldn’t help but smile when he heard the knock on his door.
When Hermione poked her head in the door, Bill gestured to the chair across his desk. His face was expressionless as he slid the paper across the desk so she could get a good look at the headline. However, if she was here, and judging by the first words she had said to him, she already knew what was in the paper. He sat silent for a long moment before finally saying anything at all.
“Explain?”

Hermione offered Bill a weak smile as she came into his office and took a seat across from him. As he slid the paper over to her, she held up her hand. The unrecognizable paper ball in her hand and the paper he'd slid across the desk towards her were one and the same. She let her hand drop and her shoulders slumped slightly as she waited for him to say something...anything. The silence was unnerving. She didn't realize she'd been practically holding her breath until Bill finally did speak. Sighing, she looked up and met his gaze.
"When I went to Diagon yesterday I stopped for ice cream," Her voice was a whisper, but she knew Bill would be able to hear her. "I'd been there all of a few minutes when he came in. I was reading this piece of trash--" she gestured to the Prophet, "--so I wasn't really paying too much attention." She shrugged, and took another deep breath. "He sat down at my table...He wanted to talk. I didn't want to be that person. His daughter had just died. He said she'd been angry at him, and that he'd promised to come talk to me." Hermione paused, her expression thoughtful. It could have been a lie, but she'd never known John to do such a thing, and especially not like that.
She swallowed a lump in her throat before she continued. "We talked--about Paige, and about what happened the night I left." She paused once more, and when she spoke again, her voice was somewhat louder. "I told him I was engaged, Bill. I told him I was marrying you and that I was happy. He even said he was happy for me." She gestured towards the paper that was sitting on his desk. "The Prophet only got one part of the story. He kissed me. I shoved him away."
She looked up at him again, and a small smile graced her lips. "You don't have any competition." She practically spat the word as her gaze flickered to the paper once more. "I don't care what those rubbish drama sharks say. You're already my family, as far as I'm concerned. I don't want to do anything to mess that up..."

Bill listened quietly and calmly as Hermione explained the story in the paper. Of course, he knew what damage could be done by over-eager news sources, but there wasn’t really much that he could do about it. Hermione deserved her side of the story, and he had known that there couldn’t possibly be much truth to the rumor, but there was always the chance that he was being too trusting. Bill had a way of doing that sometimes. He wouldn’t even wait to hear any side of the story before immediately trusting those that he was certain he could trust and taking their side. He let her finish everything that she had to say, considering it all carefully and letting silence drop over the room once more before he spoke again.
“Okay,” he said with a nod. “That was all I wanted to know.” He offered her a warm smile and pushed away from his desk so he could get up. He walked around to her and pressed a kiss to the top of her head before picking up the paper and holding his wand to a corner. “Incendio.” There was no need for the offending headline to exist in the room anymore. “If he ever pulls something like that again, I cannot be held responsible for my actions.”
Everyone knew that Bill was the gentle lion, incapable of hurting something so much as a fly, but he also didn’t take kindly to people doing things like this. He trusted Hermione, and he could see that there were some serious issues there for John, but that didn’t excuse his behavior. “Other than that… How is he holding up?” He couldn’t imagine losing one of his kids and the impact that would have on him. He couldn’t help but wonder what sort of actions he might take as well. He wasn’t even upset that Hermione had stayed to talk to him.
“I trust you, Hermione,” Bill said quietly. “And I love you.” He just had to wonder what to do about John Gordon. He really wasn’t the type to fight over anything, but the wolf had changed him, amplified certain parts of his personality, and he wasn’t happy about this. He could let it go this time, he guessed, especially given the other circumstances. It was likely that John was hurting, and Bill could respect that at least, but he wasn’t going to let this sort of thing continue further. “I know you can take care of yourself, but if you need me to step in…” It was highly likely that Bill would do so without Hermione asking or expecting him to should something like this happen again.

When Bill finally spoke, Hermione let out a sigh of relief. That same familiar smile was back on his face again, and she couldn't help but smile herself. She took a step back as the paper was incinerated, the smile still on her face. Bill had a way of lightening the mood, and his actions were nothing more than a symbol of the fact that the near-argument was already over. She nodded and let out a small sigh when he spoke again. "And I wouldn't hold you responsible. I'm sure no one would, but I'm sure it won't happen again." She hoped. John had always been a somewhat insistent individual, and Hermione could never really tell what the future would hold, but she was confident for now that John would leave the issue alone.
Hermione shrugged. "I... I don't know, honestly. He didn't seem like himself, but I imagine..." Actually, Hermione couldn't imagine what it would be like to lose a child. She didn't have any children of her own. She was about to marry Bill, and Bill had three children. What would she feel if one of them were to be lost forever like that? She shivered and sucked in a deep breath at the thought. "He seems to be holding up...but I don't know how much merit there is to that." Hermione knew that she was often a completely different person when she was around Bill or family than anywhere else. It gave her a chance to be less guarded and more herself. She couldn't help but wonder if John was as together around his family as he seemed to be that day in Diagon Alley.
"I can," Hermione nodded. "But thank you. I promise I will let you know." She moved forward and wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him close. She knew, of course, what his offer really meant. This protective (and perhaps a little bit possessive) side of Bill was something that she'd gotten used to fairly quickly. It wasn't just the man in him that drove it, but the wolf as well, and Hermione loved him all the more for it. She sighed, laying her head on his chest and breathing in his scent. "Nothing could compete with this..." she whispered. "I love you, Bill."

"If it does, we will deal with it then," Bill said with a nod. There really wasn't any reason to get too upset over the situation, especially not after it had been explained. When it came down to it, Bill trusted Hermione and he knew that he could take her word for this, whatever had happened. Of course, the rest of the news told Bill that John very well may not have been thinking clearly when he had kissed Hermione in the first place. He couldn't imagine what it would be like to lose a child. He had three precious children of his own and he couldn't imagine life without any of them.
"I can only imagine," he said quietly. "He deserves the benefit of the doubt for now, I suppose." That didn't mean that Bill would be so kind should it happen again. He could get very territorial, very protective, when it came to things like this. Hermione was his, part of the family, his fiancee. They were about to be married and that was something that should be respected, no matter what had been there before. He had some sort of honor attached to himself, so he expected the same from everyone else as well.
"We really should start planning the wedding," he said before nuzzling against her and then capturing her lips in a soft kiss. When he broke the kiss, he held her close and ran a hand over her hair. "Mum will probably insist that it happens at the Burrow... She's going to be thrilled."

Hermione shivered. "He seemed... I don't know. Numb? I think that's a word for it. He mentioned it...it was almost in passing." She sighed, and her lips curled into a small frown at the thought. "Paige was a very sweet girl. John did really well with her. I can't imagine, either. I think something like that would destroy me..." Hermione didn't have any children of her own, but she liked to think of Bill's children as her family just as much as she did him, and she would be crushed if anything were to happen to any of them. She closed her eyes and tried to shake it all off. When she opened them again, she smiled up at Bill.
"Everything is going to be fine," she nodded, glad for the moment that the topic had taken a turn for the time being. She wrapped her arms around him and cuddled herself into his chest, letting out a soft laugh when he mentioned the wedding. She had been very much looking forward to it, but with their schedules at the school, neither of them had been able to take too much time to prepare for it at all. Thank goodness for summer. At least that offered them a small reprieve.
She chuckled. "We really should," she agreed. "I should contact Molly. I think having the wedding at the burrow sounds like a great idea. Maybe she could even help with the planning a bit? I bet that would be nice, especially once things with the school start picking up again. You think she'd like that?" Hermione asked, looking up and meeting Bill's gaze again.

Bill just nodded. The loss of a child was something incredibly huge. There wasn't really anything that could be compared to that, and he remembered all too well how his parents had reacted to Fred's death. Everyone had been prepared for the worst, but only on the most general of terms. It was expected that there would be casualties in a great war such as that one, but that was still just on a general basis. There was nothing that could prepare them for the reality of it once it hit. It was sad, but sometimes things just couldn't be prevented.
"I expect she'll like that very much," Bill said, glad for the subject change. "She will probably insist on it, actually." It was going to be interesting, planning another wedding and getting things settled. There were so many things to decide. They hadn't even really discussed when to have it or who to invite. He'd never really considered getting married again until he'd gotten involved with Hermione, so he didn't have any plans that he desperately wanted to follow through with.
"What were you thinking?" He asked. "Summer? Winter? We'll have to work around the school schedule, of course..." It had, perhaps, just started setting in. There was no question in his mind that he wanted to marry Hermione. There was no question that he wanted to continue growing his family with her, but the reality of it was just starting to hit him. Fleur was supposed to be the only one for him and now here he was, years later, preparing to marry once again. He smiled at Hermione. This was the woman that he wanted to spend the rest of his days with.

Hermione giggled at the thought and smiled up at Bill. "I'll send her an owl straight away, then. I'm sure we'll need the help anyway, once school gets started again." Hermione had always been very fond of Molly, and was more than a little excited about the wedding and her new family. She hugged Bill around his midsection and smiled as she leaned against him. "I'm so excited. I can't wait to get Molly's opinion." A blush came to her cheeks, and she buried her face a little further into Bill's robes.
"Winter maybe? During the holiday break?" It would have to be that way, especially with both of them so heavily involved in the school. Being a head of house, Hermione would probably have to have someone keep an eye on things while she was gone as well. She already had a few people in mind for the task. It would definitely be an eventful holiday for sure. Her heart beat a little faster at the mere thought of it, and she couldn't help but smile again. She had never been so excited about anything that she could remember. She was finally going to have the family that she had secretly always wanted...even if this had come about in a way that she hadn't expected. It was a good thing. She loved this man, and she couldn't wait to make everything official. Her family was going to go from one person to five...and she loved it.
She glanced up, meeting Bill's gaze again. "Do you want to invite a lot of people, or should we keep it private?" Now that the war was supposedly over, people were relaxing a little more. Everything used to have to be done in relative secret, but people were coming out of their shells now and really enjoying life again. Hermione didn't entirely agree with that viewpoint, but part of it was true--things were much more safe than they used to be when she was younger.
It was easy to forget the stress of the earlier conversation when they had something like this to focus on. Hermione was definitely glad for that.
